It all started with an urge to gain industry experience and a greater commitment to my future designer self.
In my late 2nd year, I knew I needed to find a place to work for my summer break, because why not?
That’s when I sat down, with my laptop, for days working on my portfolio.. At the moment, making the portfolio itself felt so overwhelming, like I have no worthy work to share. But i was confident that i can learn and do anything I am presented with and would put my whole heart to it.
I started dropping cold mails/dm to a lot of studios, but got a call back from a very few, and that’s how I ended up landing my first interview.
With the belief I had in myself, I went ahead and gave the interview, and in turn had a very interactive conversation with Mansi( founder@Furnestry),
She asked me the final question:
-Why do I want to do this internship, when I can travel to my home and just enjoy?
And i said
-Because this is an opportunity to learn something and any day a better option.
The interview was a success, YAYY! A couple of weeks later I joined Furnestry as a design intern.I found myself a stay near the studio, and was super-super excited for the month ahead. On my 1st day, I walked into the beautifully crafted place, once settled and briefed about everything, I was given the task of making a catalogue, the motive was to understand my taste, and also helped me to head start my work there.
As the studio specialises in the luxury of customization, I was soon sent on site visits with one of my senior, we did site measurements, understood the space and how everything works in the real world, made decisions on the final dimensions of the furniture, and later drafted the Autocad files. In the later duration of my internship, I was given the task of making furniture suggestions, for the given site layout’s, according to the clients' needs and preferences. And seeing the final draft, being presented to the client has been an overwhelming feeling.
At times, I got exhausted, the change in my routine was a lot in contrast to my college routine, sitting from 11am-7pm with one break and one person to talk to( another intern). But the spirit of learning new things, and having a project to work on made me show up everyday.
I also made suggestions for a client who wanted a convertible pool/conference table for his office, understanding his needs, I drafted the final 3D models of option made in Rhino+Sketchup ( Sketchup, a software that I have never used before, on the demand of the work needed, had to make the final model on it).
Apart from furniture, I had a very unique experience in designing wall art, under the guidance of Mansi mam. I made models for arbitrary wall art designs. And working on such detailed design, I got hold of the software, and the satisfaction of seeing the final output.
Although I expected to learn much more about the design process, this internship gave me exposure to user needs and real world work around’s.
With a lot of learning and experience in both professional & personal life, I ended my internship.
Looking forward to more future opportunities.
